Amazon.com is one of the biggest e-commerce markets in the world. I personally don’t know very many people who have never shopped there.
Did you know that pretty much anyone can sell things on Amazon? Depending on what you want to sell, there are various stages of approvals you have to go through. But one of the easiest categories to be approved to sell in, is used books.
I actually started selling used books on Amazon nearly 10 years ago when I was looking for a way to make some extra money. I had a lot of textbooks and other books that I no longer wanted and found out that you can get a lot more money by selling them on Amazon than you get in most other venues.
With a lot of trial and error, I figured out a few other things about selling used books on Amazon.
1. Used books are everywhere.
You probably have some you can part with. You may also have family or friends willing to part with their books. If not, then thrift stores, yard sales, and library book sales are great places to find inventory.
2. Used books can be found cheaply.
I never pay more than $2 for a used book, and most can be found for $1 or less. Many of these same books can be sold on Amazon for $10 or more.
3. The market on Amazon is huge.
Millions of shoppers shop on Amazon everyday. You can sell your books there without having to do any advertising or any other work to drive traffic to your inventory.
4. There are a lot of used books that sell for $25, $50, $100 or more!
Once you learn the ins and outs of what sells best (hint: it’s NOT fiction!), you will learn what to look for. I actually sold one book for $180. I bought it for $2 at a yard sale. It was a book about advertising. Some of the best types of books to sell are the more obscure ones. Stay away from best sellers because there are so many of those printed that the market is flooded and you won’t make a profit. Find books that sound boring or look unusual. Non-fiction is best. But, you have to research.
5. There are really no liability issues to worry about.
Unlike other products you could sell on Amazon like food, health products, or beauty products, used books don’t really have any major liability issues to worry about. If you are a beginner seller, you really don’t want to get in over your head with potential legal issues, so used books are a safe option.
6. There is no lengthy or complicated approval process to sell used books.
Amazon requires some complex application processes for selling products in some of the categories on their site. But used books isn’t one of them. (Note: “collectible books” does require special approval, but you don’t want to classify used books as collectible, so don’t worry about that.)
7. You can sell these books using FBA (fulfillment by Amazon).
Amazon Prime is a service that customers of Amazon pay $99 a year for. By paying the fee, they can get any Prime-eligible item at Amazon.com sent to them in 2 to 3 days for free.
Items that qualify for Prime shipping are items that are stored in Amazon’s warehouses and that are fulfilled by Amazon (packed and shipped by Amazon’s employees).
If you send your used books to Amazon’s warehouses, your books will qualify for Prime shipping. It’s a proven fact that items that sell through Amazon Prime can sell for more money than items that are shipped directly by the individual seller.
So basically, you go through Amazon’s listing process, you label each book with the label they provide, then you box up the books and send them to Amazon where they store them and ship them to customers as they are ordered.
So not only do you get to charge more for your items that go through Prime, but you don’t have to worry about shipping out individual orders. It’s so easy! You can even go on vacation and not worry about having to ship out orders, since Amazon does it for you. Yes, it does cost more to use FBA, but the extra income and benefits make it well worth it.
To wrap this up, selling used books on Amazon is a great way to earn either extra income or even a full-time income for some. It can be done in your spare time. You can set your own hours. And you can do a lot of the work at home. You do have to make the time to go out and find books. And large numbers of books are heavy, so you have to be able to manage that. But if those are not obstacles for you, then the sky is really the limit.
